BURLEIGH HEADS, Queensland/Australia (Sunday, February 20, 2011) - Taj Burrow won his second consecutive Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Breaka Burleigh Pro hel
The final race of the Motocross season was bitter sweet as we say goodbye to another year of incredible racing action. Steel City Raceway, located in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania, was the site of the last race and after an exhausting trip across the country I was extremely excited to see how this Motocross story would end. With two remaining titles still left to be determined there was plenty of anticipation for the final flag to drop and declare the titles for the women?s and the 250 class as well as the final points for all the racers. One special note, the last race of the season was dedicated to raise money to Cure Breast Cancer with a variety of ways to donate; silent auction, raffle tickets, cupcakes, and wristbands; our great Motocross community pulled together and ultimately raised $20,000!

The racing conditions at Steel City were much better than the last few races, making the final Moto?s of the 250 class a real battle for positions. After a mechanical DNF and some bad luck at the last race, Christophe Pourcel really needed to pull off a miracle to earn back those lost points and regain that lead. Unfortunately for Christophe, not even his overall wins in both Moto?s would be enough to surpass the points lead over Ryan Dungey; Christophe would end the season in second place, just 11 points behind the new 250 Motocross Champion.

After a hard fought season Ryan Dungey would come away the 250 winner at Steel City. He didn?t need a win but just to finish off in a good spot and that?s just what he did with a 2-2 finish. Not only did Ryan earn the Championship title but he will also be the captain of Team USA riding a 450 as we get set for the Motocross of Nations. Check out my Interview with the new 250 Champion Ryan Dungey!

Brett Metcalfe?s results at Steel City weren'this best finish this season but his overall points and great work all season long was the key to Brett?s 3rd place in the series.
Earning three overall wins this summer helped Jake Weimer grasp a 4th place on the series. It was a slow beginning but Jake really made up for lost points after Thunder Valley; ever since he?s been on fire earning points and showing us all why he is now a part of Team USA
.
He carried his victory over from Moto-X 338 and put himself back on the podium at Steel City Raceway. Justin Barcia earns another 3rd place podium in his first Moto of the day but gets 13th in Moto 2. Justin?s first full year of Professional Motocross earned him a 5th in the series.

This summer the 250 class had its share of rising stars on the track. One bright Great British star who was in the top 10 most of the season was Tommy Searle. Tommy results this summer were pretty consistent but he was only on the podium a handful of times, three to be exact, but the rest of the time he was almost always within the top ten. With those kinds of steady results it?s no wonder that Tommy finished out the season in 6th place.

Holding on to that 7th place for the last four rounds, Broc Tickle completes the season much improved from last year. In the last race of the season, Broc had a decent start but feel back before the 1st lap and had to work hard to finish in 11th place. With another mid-pack start in Moto 2 Broc had to move quickly and make some passes to get to 9th and that?s where he maintained it until the checkered flag. Broc didn?t miss a race this entire summer; he fought hard in every Moto, and put his bike in the top ten almost every weekend while gaining valuable experience. Tickle was 14th in the 08? MX season so he is moving in the right direction, nice work Broc!

Blake Wharton had another good day at the races earning a 3rd place overall on the day making this his 2nd time on the podium this Motocross season. At the close of Steel City Raceway, Blake?s overall Motocross Nationals point?s standings earned him a nice 8th place finish. Last year Blake raced the last three Nationals and earned a few 4th place finishes and was 25th in the standings; this year he came back and got his first podiums, got a 2nd overall at Washougal, and yes he had some tough races, but Blake didn?t miss a Moto and finished the season in style.

Tyla Rattray made the move to the USA to race the Motocross Nationals this year. Rattray didn?t miss a beat coming right out at Glen Helen with a 3rd overall. He would continue along that path riding good races and earning points until a hand injury that would take him out for 3 rounds of racing. Tyla went out in 5th and would come back to finish the season in 9th. It was round 11, MotoX-338 when Tyla would get his first and only win this season. Going into the last race of the season things looked good but during the morning qualifiers Rattray was hit by another rider and went to the ground grabbing for his knee unable to get up right away. Tyla did line up for Moto one and struggled to finish in 21st and by Moto 2 he had decided to call it a day and season. This South African rider definitely made this series interesting and I can?t wait to see what?s next for Tyla!

Trey Canard, who was injured at Round 4?s High Point Raceway, was on hand at Steel City to watch the last race of the season. I did catch up with Trey and asked him about that arm injury; he told me ?things are going good and he is feeling just about back to normal and is ready to get back to training for Supercross. That?s great news and I am looking forward to seeing Trey back in action soon! Even though Trey didn?t race the entire series, he did earn a handful of points placing him in 13th place.

Both Kyle Cunningham and Matt Lemoine came to Steel City tied for point teetering on that 10th place in the series. It was Matt who would earn a 13th over Kyle?s 16th overall and that three point difference was all it took to move Lemoine in the top ten at the final checkered flag.

One quick note about the Women's MX class: The Women?s Motocross class also crowned its Champion at Steel City and it was an unusual ending to say the least. Ashley Fiolek came into the last race with a good lead on the points and thankfully because with a twist of fate she broke her collarbone in the first Moto and luckily still managed a seventh place finish. Ashley opted out of Moto 2 which gave her nearest competitor, Jessica Patterson a nice chunk of points. Jessica did win both Moto?s and earned the overall at Steel city but she was still five points shy of making this a way different story. It?s pure genius that Ashley was able to continue the race even after she had broken her collarbone; this is one super tough girl and I am looking forward to seeing more from the entire women?s class in the future. At the 13th annual 'A Day in the Dirt' I got a chance to talk with Sayaka "Teriyaki Sauce" Kaneshiro, WMX Pro #15
How was your racing today?
It was good, I thought we had a practice first, I went out and it was actually a race. I was just racing and riding around, I felt like ... WOW!

What did you think of the event overall?
It was to difficult racing for me, because I didn't ride my pace. I rode about 6th place, less than I wanted to. I got the same number as last year, I just tried to do my best.

It?s been 5 years since Ezra Lusk hung up his racing boots and turned his passion of racing dirt bikes into retirement life with lots of family time and tennis. This past weekend at the US Open of Supercross in Las Vegas Nevada, Ezra strapped back on his racing boots, jumped on the 450 and took to the track to see what could happen. I chatted with Ezra in the pits and we talked racing and life; I was surprised to hear what he had to say.

Angela: Ezra it?s been a long time since I?ve seen you at a race, I am so excited to see you out here at the US Open, how was the race last night, and how do you feel being back?
Ezra: It feels really good to be back. Friday night was pretty tough, I had way more butterflies than I could ever imagine having and I think more butterflies than my first race ever. Being 16 years old at your first race you are pretty naive and it?s hard to grasp the situation and the moment and last night it really caught up to me and I couldn?t make anything happen, I couldn?t race the track so I just rode around, it seemed. Today?s been pretty good, so I am excited to go out there and race tonight.

A: What did you do with all those nerves after you got started racing?
E: The nerves did go away after awhile but my speed was kind of lacking, I just couldn?t put together any fast laps and yeah eventually the nerves went away.

A: What?s it like making your way back to the track five years later with some of those guys who were just getting into racing when you were leaving?
E: All the guys out here are great and I know all the guys have respect for one another and they all have shown me a lot of respect which is very cool but I just need to get out there and run with the guys and pick up the pace and stick with them and feel it out. This weekend I just wanted to feel it out and try to be up there and get some good laps in with them and not go to the LCQ?s like I did last night.

A: Ezra what?s the main reason for your return to the US Open of Supercross this weekend?
E: The purpose of me coming out to the US Open was to see if I want to come back and race again. Really I wanted to see if I should enter into a full Supercross contract come race time and really commit to that. You know I don?t really want to base this solely on this weekend and personally how I felt after I left here would really be the determining factor if I want to go further with it or not.

A: Now you do have a few months before 2010 Supercross kicks off, it?s exciting to hear that you would make a comeback; can I ask what sparked this return?
E: Like I say, it?s really completely up in the air and I just wanted to come here before I even try and negotiate with anybody about anything, and see if I really want to go take a spot on a team. I want to make sure that I want to be there and I don?t want to waste anybody?s time. Hopefully after tonight?s results I should have a better feel of what I want to do.

A: So, what have you been doing over the past few years and what kinds of preparation did you put into coming back this weekend and making these kinds of discussions?
E: Well over the last five years I?ve been ridings but it?s inconsistent and in between playing lots of tennis but over the last year I?ve really got back on my bike and enjoyed it. This past 6 months I?ve really put in a lot of time on the bike with lots of laps on the 4-stroke. I didn?t really get to race the 4-stroke all but one race before I retired so getting used to that?s been the biggest issue for me.

A: What about your family, did they all make it out here to support you at this race?
E: Yes, my wife and two boys are out here along with my brother and a few of his friends, it?s great to have them out here.

A: Great seeing you Ezra, have a great race tonight!
E: Thank you

Supercross will undergo a 'Pink' transformation this weekend in Anaheim to show their support and help promote Breast Cancer Awareness, including contributions to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Orange County.
Expect to see a lot of masculine Supercross guys wearing pink riding gear, or somehow sporting the color to show their support for this great cause. Also it is a Valentines weekend, so many of the guys are getting all kinds of lady love ...
Press day is always fun and this week I decided to get a different view from some of the top Supercross guys. Ryan Villopoto, Nick Wey, Justin Brayton, Broc Tickle, Max Anstie, and Eric McCrummen all took a few minutes with me to do the video interviews you see below. (Right now I just have Justin's interview in the video portion.)
First interview - the guy in third place right now in the Supercross Class, Ryan Villopoto. I had to chat with RV about his current race status, the competition, and that win from San Francisco.
Ryan V: Things are good, I am 10 points down and before San Fran it was 20 so in the last two races I have made up 10 points and we are not even half way yet so I think it is going to be a good series, the rest of it. Ten points is nothing and with just a couple of good finishes, it is racing and anything can still happen. I plan on staying consistent and get good starts and try to get some more wins.
Dungey did race with James at Anaheim 1, and now that James and Chad are out they think there is not a lot of racing to show now but that is not true. Dungey is a tough guy, but I know I can race Ryan, I am right there to battle him, my lap times are right there and even better sometimes. We have yet to go head to head but I am looking forward to it and we should have some good racing when that happens.
San Fran was good. It was a confidence booster and it is always fun winning. That is what we do this for, to win races and in the long run to win a championship. The team is working hard, I am working hard, and the bike is good so we are just going to keep plugging away and try to get some more of those wins and close that points gap.

Next up: The Supercross Rookie from England, Max Anstie. He is currently riding the West Coast Lites on the DNA Shred Stix Star Racing Yamaha team and in seventh place. I asked him how he felt about his first Supercross season, that almost near second at San Diego and what his plans after Anaheim 3 with the eight week racing delay.
Max A: It really took me 3 or 4 races before I really felt comfortable and getting the initial new experience out of the way and to get over the fact that, wow, I am actually here racing Supercross, and it is what I have dreamt about since I was a little kid. But it took me those first few races to get things sorted out, but last weekend at San Diego was really cool and I was riding really good and I started to settle in to a good pace. I felt like I belonged out there and was really riding good. The team and everyone has been putting in a lot of hard work at DNA Shred Stick Star Racing Yamaha, so I am happy and it will be good this weekend.
Last weekend in San Diego I was real close. I was running in fifth and got to second and was catching up to Jake. I was running alongside him at one point in the race, got a little bit held up and then went down on that last lap with two corners to go. I was bummed but that is the way it goes and I actually ended up fourth, it was okay. It was by far the best ride I have had and it was really cool to show everyone on the team that we have been doing out work and the hard work is paying off and I believe I can be up there.
During the eight weeks off, well I have actually just signed up to get my diploma in an American school. I have my diploma from English school but I was in school all day yesterday getting everything ready to go and sorted out. I am looking forward to doing that and I will probably doing a lot of school work. Oh, I passed my driving test last week so it will be nice to drive myself to the test track.
Another Lites guy out at Press Day was Broc Tickle. Broc is one of the four guys in the West Coast Lites to consistently place in the top 10 in the Main. Broc had a fairly good run in the Nationals in 2009, earning a seventh place. Broc told me his opinion on his season so far and his plans during the eight weeks off.
Broc T: It feels good to have a consistent Supercross year. This is my second full year of racing. It is exciting to finally be consistent, but I know I can do better - I know there is a lot of improvement I can do so I am happy with where I am at right now. It is all about confidence out there, with so many great guys racing, but it is all about who has the confidence every weekend and remaining consistent. As for the eight weeks off, I am not sure I would call it off time because I might be riding a 450 on the East Coast so we will see how that goes. Other than that I will probably take a week off and then start with some Outdoor and get my settings ready for the Nationals MX series.
Nick Wey is by far one the funniest Motocross guys I have met during my time with Supercross.com and he did not disappoint with his quick wit and charisma. This year Nick came into the series with no Factory support, like a lot of guys in his boots, but a few races in Nick found himself as a fill in for Chad Reed on the Monster Energy Kawasaki Team. I asked Nick about this turn of events and more ...
Nick: I put the most importance on having competitive equipment and with riding the Kawasaki it is an awesome move for me. Having Kawasaki to take me on to their team when Chad got injured was a good deal for me. Being on the Factory bike for a couple of weeks now I think it is perfect timing to prove what I have got on it, so I am excited for this weekend for sure. I am very appreciative to the TiLube guys, Babbitts, MSR, & Foremost for staying with me, we are just kind of organizing some things in the background right now, just so I will be a little more prepared once I am back over there.
I have been riding a Kawasaki for quite some time now but the team came together super late and we were not able to do a lot of development with the bike, so I was running it with settings just how Pro Circuit gave it to us. I am definitely learning a lot from the set up the Kawasaki guys have. They have a lot of smart individuals over there and people putting together a bike for their team - I am learning quite a bit from them.
San Diego I got a good start and was able to lead a couple of laps and kind of made a couple of big mistakes from there and fell back quite a bit. The track was a bit slippery because it was hard packed and add the rain and it was pretty tough to stay consistent on every lap. I almost went down a few times and at one point I got passed by four guys at once, so it was one of those nights where it was tough if you were not just on it. This weekend I am hoping to be a little more comfortable out there and get another good start and stay smooth and finish quite a bit stronger.
The last Supercross West Coast Lites guy I talked to was Eric McCrummen, he rides the 410 bike on Team Hostility. The Pink Supercross race this weekend has special meaning for many and Eric shared with me how he felt about Supercross going 'Pink' and what he has going on for Anaheim 3.
Eric M: I will definitely be wearing a lot of pink. It is a special weekend for me because my grandma passed away from breast cancer. I think it is great that Supercross has an opportunity to support this great cause and the awareness of it. I think this weekend should be really good for me with maybe a little inspiration from my grandma up above. It is a special thing that is going on when the sport that I love is going beyond it's norm to bring awareness to something that has affected my life. As for the bike, Team Hostility did a great job with all pink graphics with the pink ribbons. We got some specially made pink spokes that look pretty cool. There is some stuff on the helmet so keep an eye out for the 410!

As the West Region ends for a while, and East region gets ready to start up ... In 250 West Supercross 2010, Jake Weimer and Trey Canard are showing a lot of confidence right now. I'm very impressed with both of these racers right now. This past race at Anaheim was a good example for both of them.
Series points leader Jake Weimer has a great heat race with a win, even after that heat was red-flagged. Jake had some trouble in the Main Event, but showed his smarts by charging hard the full 15 laps, coming up to eighth at the finish ... that could literally save his season and potentially the championship title.
Trey had some problems in his heat, but came back very strong in the final - he won the 250 Main in Anaheim. That shows a lot of maturity from him as a rider.
They are both adapting well to the tracks, which this year seem to be a little tighter, which can sometimes make it harder to pass other riders on. Both are showing a lot of confidence, and a lot of maturity.
The big picture for the two of them right now is they get to settle down and take a break away from this series. Once you start racing in a new year, you reach a new plateau of physical fitness because you push yourself harder when racing as compared to practice. They've had six races back-to-back.
For Trey, he's supposed to be doing a few East Coast races for Honda Red Bull racing in the 450 Supercross class. That will be a good (and new) experience for him lining up against the guys in the 450 class. You have the top three guys in supercross from last year - James Stewart, Chad Reed and Andrew Short all out of action with injuries - the sky is the limit for everyone. I think it will be a great confidence builder as well for Trey to get out there and run with the 450's.
OK, now, big picture for the 450 Supercross class. You have three guys trying to separate themselves from the others, and it could very well be that one of these three riders will end up being the 2010 AMA Supercross Series Champion: Ryan Dungey, Josh Hill, and Ryan Villopoto.
Ryan Dungey, after coming off a great 450 ride in October at the Motocross des Nations, and starting this supercross season with a lot of confidence, ... seems to me, ... and I could be wrong, like he is thinking about the championship already. It seems like he's looking at a lot of different things possibly different than how he has in the past. He might be riding more defensively than he was earlier in the season ... he's looking at potentially different set ups for suspension and tires, and possibly more.
I think if Ryan rides smooth and calculated like he did at the first couple of rounds, he'll get back in the good groove that he was in.
Josh Hill: He's been there (near the front) every weekend. Once he gets his 'break thru' win of this season, he'll know that he can win, and I think he'll be a different rider. He's fun to watch, he's really quick in a lot of areas, and isn't afraid to mix it up with guys.
Ryan Villopoto: At the first couple rounds he didn't look real impressive. He wasn't 'putting it all together'. But now, and you saw it last weekend in Anaheim, he rode very fast, was impressive, smooth, and made very few mistakes. I think he's very comfortable running in the top position on the race track. Ryan looks to be 'coming on' right now, ... and Hill and Dungey will have to do something about it if they want it to change.
